Adventure writer and naturalist Sy Montgomery is the Writer in Residence for Spring 2023. Montgomery has written more than 30 books for adults and children and was a 2015 finalist for the National Book Award for nonfiction with her New York Times bestseller “The Soul of an Octopus, A Surprising Exploration Into the Wonder of Consciousness.” One book, “Spell of the Tiger, The Man-Eaters of Sundarbans” was made into a National Geographic documentary.
Sy’s newest book will explore the vital role turtles play in the ecosystem of the world. “The Book of Turtles” is aimed at a youth audience who understands the interdependence of all flora and fauna in our global biome. On learning that Peninsula College Professor Brian Hauge conducts student-assisted research in Florida, Sy responded, “That is awesome! Matt and I can’t wait to meet Prof. Hauge!”
A former nature columnist for The Boston Globe, Sy will be on the campus system May 16-18 and share many of her wilderness adventures at a Studium Generale presentation Thursday May 18 at 12:35 p.m. The event is free and open to all.
“We are on the cusp of either destroying this sweet, green Earth, or revolutionizing the way we understand the rest of animate creation,” she said. “It’s an important time to be writing about the connections we share with our fellow creatures. It’s a great time to be alive.”
Noted naturalist and Milken Educator award-winner, Richard Benz, author of “Ecology and Evolution: Islands of Change” is traveling from the North Coast to attend the three-day event.
