The Pirate women, ranked No. 1 in the NWAC and No. 8 in the nation, broke two soccer records and achieved their seventh straight league title Saturday with a 15-0 victory over the Shoreline Dolphins.
Scoring four goals in that game, Sydney Warren broke the all-time single season scoring record, previously held by Bri Afoa with 23. Warren, the leading scorer in the NWAC, pushed her goal count to 25.
Teammate Jordyn DiCintio also now owns Peninsula’s career and single season assist record. She too is an NWAC leader in that category with 23, as she tied Bronte Fitzsimons’ Pirate record of 23 assists from 2013, also a single season and career record.
Peninsula is averaging eight goals a game, and has only given up five goals this season. The Pirates became the second team in Pirate women’s soccer history to score more than 100 goals in a season; they lead the NWAC with 113.
“Each year you have to look at your team and set realistic goals,” head coach Kanyon Anderson said. “With the talent we have this year, we knew we should win the North Division. And now our sights are set on winning the whole thing. We need to stay focused on taking the remainder of the season day by day and practice by practice. We also need to make sure everyone is healthy and we need to maintain our competitive edge.”
Warren led the pirates with four goals in Saturday’s Shoreline match, which out- shot Shoreline 37-0 and attained 15 goals. Kelly Kevershan added her first hat trick as a Pirate, DiCintio produced two more goals in line with her three-assist performance, Jayna Morikawa also achieved two goals and the rest came from Shantel Torres-Benito, Samantha Guzman, Yasmin Escobar-Moreno, Nicolette Paredes and Emelie Small.
Additional assists were made by Pi’llani Chaves, Taylor Graham, Kevershan, Janis Martinez-Oritz, Maddy Parton, Torres-Benito, Sarah Reiber and Cindy Vasquez.
