Rise above your circumstances

Overcoming obstacles to achieve your goals is a part of life.

Peninsula College basketball player Dimitri Amos graduated from the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy in 2010.

While attending Agassi Prep, Amos averaged 18.3 points, 13.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game, well above the national average, according to Agassi Prep.

Amos and one of his team mates would frequently get pulled out of class by Andre Agassi to perform slam dunks for celebrities.

He then went on to Mayville State for a year, then attended the College of Southern Nevada before finding his way to Peninsula College.

What only a few people know, is that Amos grew up surrounded by gangs, violence and bad influences.

“It’s like an every day basis that you would wake up hearing gunshots,” Amos said. “I didn’t grow up with a father figure so I found one in the streets.

“As I got a little older and more mature, I realized that wasn’t the life for me. People always tell me i have a gift I need to make sure I really use it. I wanted to show my little brothers that they shouldn’t go down the same route.”

Amos has been an inspiration on and off the court, from his talent with a basketball to his humble attitude.

The changes Amos has made and the steps he has taken should be recognized.

Spring will be Amos’ last quarter at Peninsula College and he is graduating with a degree in early childhood educa- tion.

Amos said, “I hope to one day teach like my mom.”

  1. Wonderful article, the road Dimitri has traveled has been long and hard but he is a fighter and never gave up. Yes I know him personally but that doesn’t matter I know a true fighter when I see one. His skills on the court are only a small part of him. His grade point average has always been a 3.0 or above, which is awesome!
