Serving the needs of students, the Associated Student Council has been a staple of Peninsula College since 1961.
Steve DeVoe, president of the ASC, said his project for the year is, “Trying to make the campus community a vibrant place for students.” The ASC held their goal setting meeting two weeks ago to really flesh out their priorities this year.
DeVoe said, “Our biggest obstacle is engaging people… That’s always been an
ongoing issue.”
Gloria Lam, ASC vice president, agreed saying, “The major problem is probably communication because the whole ASC has a lot of things to be busy about and it’s not just about the ASC, it’s about personal lives.”
On the internal workings of the ASC, Steve had this to say, “Making it fun because if people are enjoying what they are doing then it’s going to lead them to be productive.”
DeVoe wants to connect students on the satellite campuses to the ASC events and activites. “One of the things I can think of is engaging the Forks campus and the Port Townsend campus. That was something that was started last year but this year we’d like to do more engagement with those campuses because they are just as much a part of Peninsula College as we are here.”
Lam, who is an international student, said that she would like to focus on the international students. “We are afraid to speak up sometimes.”
Like DeVoe says, “Every year it’s a new invention, it’s a new group every year.”
Rick Ross, advisor to the ASC, pointed out that his role to the ASC is to, “Help facilitate ‘their’ goals and so prepare them how to navigate state institutions and how to work together and give them the foundations so that they can accomplish some things.”
